Project Reports

Using the Assessment and Scoring System elsewhere in Europe

This document explains how some of the methods developed for the SMURF project have been used to look at rivers elsewhere in Europe.

Environmental Statement - Perry Hall Playing Fields

Environmental Impact Scoping Report - Perry Hall Playing Fields

Perry Hall Playing Fields are designated Green Belt land in the Birmingham City ward of Perry Barr. The playing fields are used by all age groups and the River Tame is its most important feature.

The Environment Agency is currently looking for feedback on proposals to improve the river channel in the playing fields, to improve access and amenity near the river, to landscape and plant the area and to provide educational and interpretation materials. You can download information on all of the proposals below. Feedback on the report should be sent to [email protected], or mailed to the address given in the main report. We would appreciate your feedback by 13th September 2004.

Environmental Sustainability Indicators Report

This report describes a method for deriving Environmental Indicators for urban river assessment. It looks at the scales that should be considered (catchment, sector, stretch, habitat and patch), and how to survey and classify and rate urban rivers and their surroundings. It discusses how different qualities should be measured at different scales (e.g. vegetation along a stretch; water quality along a sector). Finally, it presents a detailed scoring system for it all.

Community Workshop Notes

These workshop notes give a short summary of the workshop process. The notes don't record each workshop word-for-word but, where possible, the words of the participants have been used as they described questions, concerns, ideas and hopes regarding the sustainable management of urban rivers and floodplains.

Know-How Workshop Report

See the Project Events page for a brief description of the Know-How workshop.

Benchmark Report

A key component of the SMURF project is the development of a GIS-based catchment planning tool. The benchmark report sets out the existing state of integrated catchment management in the UK, with reference to the rest of Europe. The report covers information management, organisational responsibilities and the most relevant and advanced technology in this field.

The information in the benchmark report was used to derive the methodology for development of the catchment planning tool for the SMURF project.

Methodology Report

This report sets out the methodology and techniques to be applied during the development and implementation of the main elements of the SMURF project:

  • Development of a transferable set of Sustainable Indicators for urban rivers
  • Citizen consultation and Stakeholder Involvement
  • Development of a GIS-based Land-Use Planning Model

The final section of the report gives an overview of how the tasks described in the report will be integrated to deliver the overall project objective.
